INTRODUCTION:

NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN is a private institution in the fashion, décor and art sectors that offer courses in and relating to fashion, interior and photography..

NWSD and its courses offer an entrepreneurial learning experience with real relevance.   The NWSD course structures provide students with a ladder of opportunity. Courses are structured to accommodate individuals regardless of age, race, nationality, religion or political persuasion.

From 1998 to 2011, North West School of Design has successfully offered a 2 year diploma course in Clothing Design & Technology as a private FET (Further Education & Training) college.

In 2011, came the decision to not only re-register the college as HET (Higher Education & Training), but also to register and accredit two new degree courses:  BA Fashion Design Degree and BSc Fashion Management & Communication Degree.

Both these 3 year courses have been developed with the vision that South African Fashion education not only needed to globalize, but also needed to adapt to the changes within the global fashion industry.  Both these fashion degrees have been developed with focusing on globalization of communication, supply and manufacturing in the fashion industry.

Designers today not only look to local shores for supplies and contractors, and therefore foundation work to prepare globalized-entrepreneurial skills for our future designers have been added to our BA Fashion Design course.  Fashion communication has also been globalized with fashion blogging and fashion news portals that form an integral part of our industry in creating jobs and freelance opportunities.  The foundation work for all forms of fashion communication and management has been added to our BSC Fashion Management & Management Degree, to ensure that these graduates are entrepreneurially prepared as freelancers and entrepreneurs from fashion writing careers to entrepreneurial opportunities in management of ranges.

To succeed in today’s fashion world, designers need to do more than sketch garments, buy fabrics and meet with clients.  North West School of Design sets a strong foundation for future designers, fashion professionals and entrepreneurs who find it more than second nature to do that little more, to learn that little extra, to read that little longer and to adapt to an industry that in two years from now will be different from the industry we know today.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students who have absenteeism problems not only suffer academically, but also socially.  Absenteeism leads to inadequate learning on the part of the student and affects their overall performance.  In the class or group situation, absenteeism of some of the students leads to unsatisfactory class averages and because our lecturer’s job performance is measured on class averages obtained by the group, NWSD cannot tolerate any unnecessary absenteeism and late comings of students.

Because the link between absenteeism and exam performance is strong, the following rules and regulations apply:
A Re-lecture fee of R45 per hour is payable for important classes missed due to unnecessary absenteeism.  (Absent without reason) This excludes absenteeism with medical certification or ‘absent with reason’ cases where the lecturer will assist students free of charge.  NWSD lecturers reserve the right to impose this upon students who have been absent with critical classes or demonstrations.
Absent With Reason refers to absenteeism with medical certification or approved written confirmation
Absent Without Reason refers to absenteeism without valid reason or certification
It is compulsory that students inform lecturers of reason for absenteeism on the day of absenteeism, by means of sms message or telephone call.  Informing a lecturer does not automatically constitute to Absent WITH reason, but only serves as notification process to prevent the lecturer from following up on the absenteeism
In extreme cases of absenteeism, lecturers will follow up with parents &/or contracting party to establish the parent’s knowledge of such absenteeism
Unnecessary late coming for class will be recorded as absenteeism from class
Re-writes for tests will not be conducted for absentees who are absent WITHOUT reason.
Re-writes for final exam will not be conducted for students who have not reached a 75% attendance rate within that year
From time to time, absenteeism will be taken into account with assessment of projects
